Built environment

The human-made surroundings that provide the setting for daily activity, encompassing buildings, streets, sidewalks, parks, transit systems, and all other constructed infrastructure. In accessibility, the built environment is a primary source of disabling barriers — missing curb ramps, uneven surfaces, inaccessible transit stops, narrow doorways, and lack of tactile or auditory wayfinding cues all restrict participation for people with mobility, sensory, and cognitive disabilities. The social model of disability positions the built environment as a key site of disablement, arguing that it is the environment that disables people rather than their impairments. Standards such as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in the US and EN 301 549 in Europe set requirements for accessible built environments, though compliance remains inconsistent globally.
