LiDAR
Also known as: Light detection and ranging, Laser scanning
A remote sensing technology that measures distances by emitting laser pulses and analysing the reflected light, producing precise three-dimensional point clouds of the surrounding environment. In accessibility, LiDAR has multiple applications: it is used to assess pedestrian infrastructure at scale by creating detailed 3D models of sidewalks, curb ramps, and surface conditions; it powers obstacle detection in intelligent wheelchairs and autonomous vehicles; it enables indoor mapping and navigation systems for people with visual impairments; and it is built into consumer devices such as iPhones and iPads, where it supports augmented reality wayfinding and spatial awareness applications for blind and low-vision users.
