Global South accessibility
Also known as: Accessibility in developing countries, Majority world accessibility
The study and practice of accessibility in countries of the Global South (Africa, South and Southeast Asia, Latin America), where over 80% of people with disabilities live. Accessibility in these contexts is shaped by distinct socio-material conditions including limited built environment infrastructure, different cultural norms around disability and help, resource constraints, collectivist social structures, and the legacy of colonialism. Applying accessibility frameworks developed in the Global North without cultural adaptation risks irrelevance or harm, making locally grounded research essential.
