Simultanagnosia

Also known as: Simultagnosia

A neurological condition in which a person can perceive individual objects but cannot see or process multiple objects simultaneously within a visual scene. Simultanagnosia is a common feature of cerebral visual impairment and dorsal stream dysfunction. In everyday life, it makes cluttered environments — supermarket shelves, busy streets, complex interfaces — extremely challenging because the brain cannot parse the visual scene as a whole. For assistive technology design, simultanagnosia requires approaches that simplify scenes and isolate relevant objects rather than traditional magnification strategies.
