Visual processing

Also known as: Visual perception, Visual cognition

The brain's ability to interpret, organise, and make sense of visual information received from the eyes, involving multiple neural pathways including the ventral stream (object recognition, "what" pathway) and the dorsal stream (spatial awareness and motion, "where" pathway). Visual processing impairments — as seen in cerebral visual impairment — differ fundamentally from ocular impairments because the eyes may function normally while the brain cannot properly interpret what they see. Understanding the distinction between optical and neurological visual impairment is essential for designing appropriate assistive technologies.
