Medicalization
Also known as: Medical gatekeeping
The process by which human conditions and differences are defined, categorized, and treated as medical problems requiring clinical intervention. In disability and AI contexts, medicalization is reinforced when technologies institutionalize diagnostic authority (e.g., AI autism diagnosis tools that cement psychiatric gatekeeping) or frame disability primarily as a deficit to be corrected rather than a form of human variation shaped by social and environmental factors.
