Personal emergency response system
Also known as: PERS, PER system, Medical alert system, Life alert
A device, typically a wearable pendant or wristband with a button, that allows a person to summon help in an emergency. Despite being the mainstream solution for older adults living alone, PERS devices suffer from poor adoption: users forget to wear them, find them stigmatizing, cannot reach them after a fall, or choose not to use them. Research shows the device is often not worn during the very falls it was designed to address, motivating hands-free voice-based alternatives.
