Perceptual speed

Also known as: Processing speed, Cognitive processing speed

The speed at which an individual can accurately perceive, compare, and respond to visual or auditory stimuli, typically measured through timed tasks requiring rapid symbol comparison or pattern matching. Perceptual speed declines with age and is a significant predictor of performance with technology — particularly web browsing and information retrieval — because it affects how quickly users can scan page layouts, identify relevant links, and process visual interface elements. Unlike age alone, perceptual speed directly captures the cognitive mechanism underlying slower performance, making it a more useful metric for designing adaptive interfaces.
