Player balancing

Also known as: Dynamic difficulty adjustment, Skill balancing

A game design technique that provides in-game advantages to lower-performing players, reducing performance disparities between competitors of different ability levels. In the context of accessibility, player balancing through skill assistance — such as aim correction in shooting games — enables players with motor disabilities to compete more equitably against able-bodied players. Research shows that well-calibrated player balancing can enhance both game enjoyment and perceived fairness for all participants, making it a key mechanism for inclusive competitive gaming and esports.
