Amblyopia
Also known as: Lazy eye
A neurodevelopmental vision disorder in which one eye has reduced visual acuity that cannot be fully corrected with glasses or contact lenses, caused by abnormal visual development in early childhood. The brain favors one eye and partially suppresses input from the weaker eye, leading to impaired depth perception, coordination, and binocular vision. Amblyopia affects approximately 5% of the global population (an estimated 403 million people) and is commonly treated through patching, atropine drops, or dichoptic visual therapy that forces both eyes to work together. It is a key consideration in accessibility because it can affect screen use, depth-based interactions, and 3D or stereoscopic content.
