Telepresence robot
Also known as: Telepresence, Remote presence robot
A mobile robotic device that enables a remote user to have a physical presence in a distant location, typically featuring a screen displaying the user's face, a camera, microphone, speaker, and wheels for navigation. In educational and workplace accessibility contexts, telepresence robots allow people who cannot attend in person — due to disability, chronic illness, or other barriers — to participate in physical spaces with more embodiment and agency than traditional video conferencing. Unlike static video calls, telepresence robots let users move through spaces, approach others, and express themselves through movement and positioning, though they also introduce accessibility challenges around audio quality, spatial awareness, and sensory overload.
