Disabled researcher
Also known as: Researcher with disability, VI researcher
A researcher who has a disability and conducts academic research, often — but not exclusively — in disability-related fields. Disabled researchers bring unique lived experience and situated knowledge to their work, which can deepen understanding and reduce bias. However, they face systemic barriers in academia: inaccessible research tools (prototyping software, data analysis packages, recording equipment), inaccessible conference and publication formats, and assumptions that research leadership requires able-bodied capabilities. Calls for more disabled researchers in HCI and accessibility research highlight both the value of lived experience in shaping research directions and the need for accessible research methodologies, tools, and career pathways.
