Accessible data capture
Also known as: Inclusive data collection methods
Research data collection methods and tools that can be independently operated by researchers with disabilities. Current standard data capture methods in HCI research — video cameras, GoPros, visual note-taking, screen-based recording software — present significant barriers to disabled researchers, particularly those with visual impairments who cannot verify camera framing, confirm recordings are running, or take handwritten notes during facilitation. Accessible data capture is an emerging area of concern as the field calls for more disabled researchers; it requires rethinking not only the accessibility of recording devices themselves but also analysis tools (e.g., NVivo, which has been found inaccessible to screen reader users) and the entire research workflow from capture through analysis.
