Augmentative and Alternative Communication

Also known as: AAC

A broad set of strategies, tools, and technologies used to supplement or replace spoken or written communication for people with complex communication needs. AAC ranges from low-tech solutions like picture boards and communication books to high-tech speech-generating devices, apps, and eye-gaze systems. AAC supports people with conditions including autism, cerebral palsy, ALS, aphasia, intellectual disabilities, and traumatic brain injury. Effective AAC implementation requires personalization to the individual user's abilities, interests, and communication goals, and involves training both the AAC user and their communication partners.
