Hemi-Attention
Also known as: Hemispatial Neglect, Unilateral Neglect, Visual Neglect, Visuo-Spatial Neglect, Visuospatial Neglect, VSN
A neurological condition in which a person has reduced attention or awareness to one side of space, typically the side opposite to a brain injury. Unlike hemianopsia (where visual input is lost), hemi-attention involves a failure to attend to or process stimuli on the affected side even though the visual system may be intact. People with hemi-attention may not notice objects, text, or people on the neglected side, fail to eat food from one side of their plate, or ignore one side of their body. This condition is commonly associated with stroke and can co-occur with cerebral visual impairment, compounding challenges with environmental perception and spatial awareness.
