Visual Field Loss

Also known as: Visual Field Deficit, VFL, Field Loss

A reduction in the area of vision that a person can see without moving their eyes or head. Visual field loss can affect any portion of the visual field — central, peripheral, or specific quadrants — and can result from conditions affecting the eyes (glaucoma, retinal detachment) or the brain (stroke, cerebral visual impairment, tumours). The pattern and extent of field loss varies widely and directly impacts daily activities including reading, navigation, driving, and social interaction. Assistive strategies include environmental modifications, scanning training, prism glasses, and emerging technologies like smart glasses with directional indicators that guide attention toward objects in the lost visual field.
