Accessibility Overlay

Also known as: A11y Overlay, Accessibility Widget, Accessibility Plugin

A third-party software product that applies a layer of JavaScript over a website claiming to automatically fix accessibility issues, typically through a toolbar widget offering features like text resizing, color contrast adjustment, and screen reader optimization. Despite marketing claims of making websites fully compliant with WCAG and disability laws, research and disability community feedback consistently demonstrate that overlays fail to address most accessibility barriers, can actually interfere with assistive technologies, and do not substitute for building accessibility into a site from the ground up. Multiple lawsuits have been filed against both overlay vendors and websites using overlays, and the accessibility community has broadly rejected these products.
