Refreshable Tactile Display
Also known as: RTD, Refreshable Braille Display, Dynamic Tactile Display
An electronic device that presents tactile graphics and content through an array of small pins that can be independently raised or lowered to create dynamic, changeable tactile surfaces. Unlike traditional static tactile graphics produced on paper through embossing or thermoforming, RTDs can update their content in real time, enabling animations, step-by-step presentations, and interactive exploration. Current commercial RTDs typically contain 2,400-3,840 pins and cost between ,000-,000 USD, which remains a significant barrier to adoption in educational settings despite their proven effectiveness for blind and low vision users.
