Episodic Productivity

Also known as: Nonlinear Productivity, Burst Productivity

A work pattern characterized by fluctuating cycles of high and low engagement rather than consistent, steady output. Common among people with ADHD and other neurodivergent conditions, episodic productivity involves periods of intense focus and high output alternating with periods of low motivation, difficulty initiating tasks, and reduced capacity. This pattern conflicts with institutional expectations of linear productivity (steady daily progress) that underpin most academic, professional, and technological systems. Research shows that tools and policies designed to accommodate episodic productivity — such as flexible deadlines, pause-and-resume task support, and adaptive milestone tracking — can better support neurodivergent workers and students.
