Invisible Disability
Also known as: Hidden Disability, Non-Apparent Disability
A disability that is not immediately apparent to others through visual observation. Invisible disabilities include ADHD, chronic pain, mental health conditions, learning disabilities, autoimmune conditions, traumatic brain injury, and many others. People with invisible disabilities face unique challenges: their need for accommodations may be questioned or disbelieved, they must actively decide whether and when to disclose their disability, and they often face pressure to "pass" as non-disabled. In technology design, invisible disabilities highlight the need for universally accessible interfaces rather than solutions triggered only by observable disability indicators.
