Task Initiation
Also known as: Task Starting, Getting Started
The executive function skill of beginning a task or activity, particularly when the task is complex, unstructured, or perceived as uninteresting. Task initiation is a common area of difficulty for people with ADHD and other executive function challenges. The difficulty is not laziness or lack of motivation but a neurological barrier to translating intention into action. Strategies that support task initiation include breaking tasks into smaller steps, starting with low-effort "warm-up" activities, using external accountability structures (deadlines, meetings, body doubling), and environmental design that reduces friction between deciding to start and actually starting. Technology can support task initiation through scaffolded workflows, gentle prompts, and reduced cognitive load at the point of entry.
