Global South Accessibility

Also known as: Accessibility in Low-Resource Settings, Developing World Accessibility

The study and practice of making technology, environments, and services accessible to people with disabilities in low- and middle-income countries. Over 80% of the world's one billion people with disabilities live in the Global South, yet most accessibility research and assistive technology innovation is conducted in the Global North. Global South accessibility must contend with unique challenges including limited healthcare infrastructure, high cost of imported assistive devices, sparse internet connectivity, language and literacy barriers, and different cultural understandings of disability.
