Onomatopoeia

Words that phonetically imitate or suggest the sound they describe, such as "buzz," "crash," "swoosh," or "sizzle." In captioning, onomatopoeia is one approach to representing non-speech sounds, offering viewers a sense of the acoustic quality of a sound. However, research shows that onomatopoeia can be challenging for some Deaf viewers, particularly those unfamiliar with the phonetic aspect of sound, and may be ambiguous regarding the sound source.
