Staff Notation
Also known as: Stave Notation, Standard Music Notation
The conventional Western system for writing music using five horizontal lines (a staff or stave) on which notes are placed at different vertical positions to indicate pitch, with various symbols for rhythm, dynamics, and expression. Staff notation is inherently graphical—unlike text, it uses both horizontal position (for time progression) and vertical position (for pitch), making it more similar to a diagram than to written language. This two-dimensional nature creates unique accessibility challenges distinct from text accessibility, as standard text magnification and screen reading approaches do not directly apply.
