Running Stitch
Also known as: Back Stitch, Stem Stitch
A basic embroidery stitch that creates a dashed or continuous line by passing the needle in and out of the fabric at regular intervals. Running stitch and its variants (back stitch, stem stitch) are fundamental line-making stitches used in embroidery. In tactile graphics, running stitches are primarily used to create lines, borders, and outlines that help define regions and guide tactile exploration. The tactile properties of running stitch lines—including their height, width, and continuity—affect how well they serve as boundaries between textured regions.
