Emotional Regulation

Also known as: Emotion Regulation, Affect Regulation

The ability to manage, modify, and respond to emotional experiences in ways that are situationally appropriate and aligned with one's goals. Emotional regulation is a significant challenge for people with ADHD, who may experience heightened emotional reactivity, difficulty managing frustration, anxiety around routine tasks (such as opening emails), and emotional responses that seem disproportionate to the triggering situation. Difficulties with emotional regulation in ADHD can affect academic performance, social relationships, and overall wellbeing, and often require collaborative support strategies beyond individual coping techniques.
