Doom Scrolling

Also known as: Doomscrolling

The tendency to continuously scroll through social media or news feeds despite the content being distressing or unproductive, often losing significant amounts of time in the process. Doom scrolling is particularly problematic for people with ADHD due to the dopamine-seeking nature of the condition and difficulties with self-regulation and task switching. ADHD students frequently describe doom scrolling as a major barrier to academic productivity, leading them to develop collaborative strategies such as phone swapping with roommates or having trusted friends set app blocker passcodes to manage the behavior.
