Universal Design
Also known as: UD
A design philosophy and practice that aims to create products, environments, and systems usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialized design. Originating in architecture with Ron Mace at North Carolina State University, Universal Design is guided by seven principles including equitable use, flexibility, simplicity, and tolerance for error. While related to accessibility, Universal Design goes beyond compliance with disability-specific standards to benefit the broadest possible range of users.
