Central Vision Loss

Also known as: Central Scotoma, Macular Vision Loss

Loss of vision in the central part of the visual field, typically caused by conditions affecting the macula such as macular degeneration or Stargardt disease. Central vision is responsible for detailed tasks like reading, recognizing faces, and seeing fine detail. Musicians with central vision loss may struggle to read music notation because it requires perceiving small, closely spaced symbols. They often develop compensatory strategies using peripheral vision and may benefit from enlarged notation and high-contrast display settings.
