Light Sensitivity
Also known as: Photophobia, Photosensitivity
An abnormal sensitivity to light that causes discomfort, pain, or visual disruption. Many people with low vision experience light sensitivity, which can be exacerbated by bright overhead lighting, backlit screens, glare from reflective surfaces, and high-contrast environments. For musicians, light sensitivity creates challenges in performance settings where lighting is often designed for audience viewing rather than musician comfort, and where the brightness of digital score-reading devices can cause discomfort or be distracting to nearby performers.
