Sight Reading

Also known as: Sight-Reading, Prima Vista

The practice of performing music from a written score without prior rehearsal or familiarity with the piece. Sight reading is a core skill in many musical contexts, particularly classical music, orchestral auditions, and freelance performance work. For musicians with low vision, sight reading presents significant accessibility barriers because it requires rapidly processing dense visual notation in real time, with no opportunity for advance preparation, enlargement, or memorization. This creates professional disadvantage in settings where sight-reading fluency is expected.
