Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

Also known as: OCD

A mental health condition affecting approximately 2% of the world population, characterized by recurrent, intrusive, unwanted thoughts (obsessions) that cause significant anxiety, and repetitive behaviors or mental acts (compulsions) performed to relieve that anxiety. OCD subtypes include contamination, responsibility/checking, harm, sexual, symmetry/just-right, and others. OCD can severely impact daily functioning, social relationships, and quality of life, with compulsions sometimes consuming hours each day. It is recognized as a disability under the ADA when it substantially limits major life activities.
