Mental Health Stigma
Also known as: Psychiatric Stigma, Mental Illness Stigma
Negative attitudes, beliefs, and discrimination directed toward people with mental health conditions, leading to social exclusion, reduced help-seeking, and diminished self-esteem. For people with OCD, stigma manifests as public misunderstanding of the condition (trivializing OCD as merely being "neat"), reluctance to disclose OCD status in social or professional settings, and shame about obsessive thoughts (particularly taboo themes involving harm, sexuality, or violence). Mental health stigma is a significant barrier to treatment access and technology adoption, as people may avoid using visible mental health tools or recording sensitive symptoms.
