Contamination OCD

Also known as: Contamination Obsessions

A subtype of OCD characterized by obsessive fears of contamination from dirt, germs, bodily fluids, chemicals, or other perceived pollutants, accompanied by compulsive behaviors like excessive hand washing, cleaning, avoidance of "contaminated" surfaces, and seeking reassurance about cleanliness. Contamination OCD triggers are highly influenced by specific object properties — the color, texture, and tactile qualities of substances, whether surfaces afford direct contact (like handles), and the perceived source of contamination (familiar vs. unfamiliar). It is one of the most common OCD subtypes.
