Multi-Modal Communication
Also known as: Multimodal Communication
Communication that simultaneously uses multiple channels or modes—such as speech, gesture, facial expression, gaze, device output, and body movement—to convey meaning. AAC users are inherently multi-modal communicators, blending whatever channels are available to them to create rich, expressive interactions. For backchanneling, AAC users combine typed responses, vocalizations, facial expressions, head movements, and even environmental sounds (chair taps, beeps) to maintain conversational engagement. Recognizing and supporting multi-modal communication is essential for AAC technology design that goes beyond text-based message generation.
