Autism Spectrum
Also known as: Autism Spectrum Disorder, ASD, Autism Spectrum Condition
A neurodevelopmental condition characterized by differences in social communication, interaction patterns, and restricted or repetitive behaviors, interests, or activities. The spectrum concept reflects the wide variation in how autism presents—ranging from individuals who need substantial daily support to those who live independently with minimal accommodations. The terminology itself is contested: medical frameworks use "Autism Spectrum Disorder" (ASD), while many autistic self-advocates prefer "autism" or "autism spectrum condition" to avoid the pathologizing implications of "disorder." Understanding autism as a spectrum emphasizes that each autistic person has a unique profile of strengths, challenges, and support needs.
