Locomotion
Also known as: VR Locomotion
Methods by which users navigate and move through virtual environments in VR. Common locomotion techniques include free-roam (physical walking that maps to virtual movement), joystick-based continuous movement, teleportation (pointing to a destination and instantly moving there), and arm-swing locomotion. Each method has different accessibility implications: free-roam requires physical space and ambulatory ability; joystick locomotion allows stationary use but requires fine motor control; teleportation reduces motion sickness but can break presence. Choice of locomotion method significantly affects both physical accessibility and experiential quality.
