Haptic Toolkit

Also known as: Tactile Prototyping Toolkit

A collection of physical materials designed to enable hands-on design and prototyping through touch rather than vision. In accessible design research, haptic toolkits are developed specifically for blind and low vision participants to create lo-fi prototypes of devices and interfaces. A well-designed haptic toolkit includes elements that can be easily manipulated without sight—such as magnetic components that snap into place, 3D-printed shapes with distinct tactile features, embossed reference materials, and moldable materials like clay. The toolkit must be intuitive enough to use with minimal instruction so participants can focus on creative design rather than material mechanics.
