Haptic Perception
Also known as: Tactile Perception, Touch Perception
The ability to perceive and interpret information through the sense of touch, including the detection of texture, shape, temperature, pressure, and vibration. Haptic perception is a primary information channel for blind and low vision people and is central to the use of assistive technologies like Braille displays, tactile graphics, and 2D tactile displays. In design and prototyping contexts, understanding haptic perception is essential for creating materials that are distinguishable by touch—elements must differ sufficiently in shape, size, texture, or height to be reliably identified without vision. Research shows that blind individuals often develop refined haptic perception skills through experience.
