VizWiz

A mobile application and research platform that allows blind people to take photos with their phones and receive answers to visual questions from human workers or AI systems. VizWiz originated as a research project at Carnegie Mellon University and has generated important datasets for accessibility research, including the VizWiz Grand Challenge dataset containing images and questions collected directly from BLV users. The platform highlights real-world use cases of visual access technology and the challenges of interpreting photos taken by blind users, which are often poorly framed, blurry, or partially obscured. VizWiz data represents authentic BLV user needs and has been influential in training and evaluating visual question answering systems.
