Cross-Platform Consistency
Also known as: Platform Consistency, Multi-Platform Accessibility
The quality of providing a consistent, reliable user experience across different devices, operating systems, and application versions. For blind and low vision users, cross-platform consistency is a fundamental accessibility requirement because they often use multiple devices for different tasks or verification purposes (e.g., checking a calendar entry on both desktop and mobile). Inconsistencies between platforms—such as different keyboard shortcuts, changed layouts, or varied screen reader behavior—force BLV users to learn and maintain multiple workflows. When applications update their interfaces, BLV users must invest significant effort relearning accessible workflows, creating resistance to change and platform updates.
