Narrative Immersion
Also known as: Story Immersion, Narrative Presence
A psychological state in which the audience becomes deeply absorbed in a story world, perceiving the mediated content as if it were an unmediated reality. In accessible media, narrative immersion encompasses spatial presence (feeling present in the story environment), content engagement (being absorbed by the narrative), ecological validity (the experience feeling natural and believable), and emotional engagement (connecting emotionally with characters and events). For visually impaired users of audio-described media, immersion depends heavily on sound design quality, audio effect timing, voice acting, and the seamless integration of narration with sound elements. Overlapping audio effect placement consistently achieves the highest immersion scores.
