Typography

Also known as: Typographic Design

The art and technique of arranging type to make written language legible, readable, and visually appealing. In accessibility contexts, typography encompasses font selection, size, weight, spacing (letter spacing, word spacing, line height), alignment, and contrast. Research has shown that typographic choices significantly impact reading performance for people with dyslexia — sans serif, monospaced, and Roman fonts generally outperform serif, proportional, and italic styles. Accessible typography is a key component of inclusive design and is addressed by WCAG success criteria.
