Low Literacy

Also known as: Limited Literacy, Functional Illiteracy

A level of reading and writing ability that is below what is typically needed to function effectively in everyday situations requiring text comprehension. Low literacy may result from limited educational opportunities, learning disabilities, cognitive disabilities, or reading in a non-native language. People with low literacy benefit from reading support technologies including text simplification, audio augmentation, visual aids, and image-based interfaces. Research has explored support for low-literacy users through web pop-up windows, audio recordings, and simplified text presentation.
