Non-Visual Reading

Also known as: Audio Reading, Tactile Reading

Methods of accessing written content without relying on visual perception, including braille reading, screen reader audio output, and text-to-speech technology. Non-visual reading is essential for blind users but presents unique challenges for navigation, skimming, and comprehension of complex documents. Research has explored approaches to improve non-visual reading efficiency, including concurrent speech channels (the cocktail party effect), adjustable speech speed, audio gist summaries, and touch-based navigation interfaces for skimming.
