Down Syndrome

Also known as: Trisomy 21

A genetic condition caused by the presence of an extra copy of chromosome 21, resulting in intellectual disability and characteristic physical features. People with Down syndrome typically experience challenges with reading, language development, and working memory, though abilities vary widely. Reading support technologies for people with Down syndrome may include simplified text, visual aids, and multisensory approaches. Only one study in 25 years of HCI reading support research specifically focused on Down syndrome, highlighting it as an underserved community.
