Heading Navigation
Also known as: Navigate by Headings
A screen reader navigation strategy that allows users to jump between heading elements (h1-h6) on a webpage, bypassing intermediate content to quickly find sections of interest. Heading navigation is one of the most important strategies for efficient screen reader use, but its effectiveness depends on web developers using proper heading hierarchies. Many websites use headings inconsistently or inappropriately (e.g., styling text to look like headings without using heading tags), which undermines this navigation strategy. Tools like Task Mode complement heading navigation by filtering which content is available to navigate.
