AAC Device
Also known as: AAC System, Communication Device
A dedicated hardware device or software application designed to support augmentative and alternative communication for people who cannot rely on natural speech. AAC devices range from low-tech options (communication boards, picture cards) to high-tech systems (speech-generating devices with eye gaze or switch access). High-tech AAC devices can cost from hundreds to over £8000, creating significant access barriers particularly in the Global South. The emergence of AAC applications on mainstream smartphones and tablets has begun to reduce cost barriers, though challenges of customization, language support, and clinical training remain.
