Gaze Fixation
Also known as: Eye Fixation, Visual Fixation
The act of maintaining one's gaze steadily on a specific point or target, as opposed to saccadic eye movements between points. In gaze-based assistive technology, gaze fixation is the primary mechanism for making selections — users fixate on a desired target for a set dwell time to activate it. Conditions affecting eye movement control, such as nystagmus, spasticity, or progressive neurological conditions like Parkinson's disease, can make maintaining stable gaze fixations challenging, potentially limiting the usability of gaze-based communication systems for some individuals.
