Low-Resource Setting
Also known as: Resource-Limited Setting, Resource-Constrained Environment
A context characterized by limited financial resources, infrastructure, trained professionals, and technological capacity that affects the availability and sustainability of services including healthcare and assistive technology. Low-resource settings present unique challenges for AT deployment: unreliable electricity, limited internet connectivity, shortage of trained therapists, prohibitive device costs, and climatic conditions that may affect hardware durability. In such contexts, low-tech and smartphone-based assistive technologies may offer more sustainable solutions than expensive dedicated devices, though they still require supporting ecosystems to be effective.
